Micro Trends You Can’t Ignore | Will They Stay?
What are Micro Trends?
Parts of fashion can come and go before we know it, with styles changing year to year. But with the new term “micro trends” gaining popularity on social media platforms such as Tik Tok, these short lived fads have a new outlook on style. Micro trends are a short lived fashion phenomena that originate online through social media posts or influencer street style. They don’t stay long but when they’re here they are unstoppable. You may have been a victim to a transient style that is now sitting in the back of your closet and hasn’t been touched for months. But as we know it these trends can leave just as fast as they came.
Social Media’s Role in Micro Trends
As we’re familiar with it, social media plays a huge factor in many adolescent and young adult’s lives as it can influence many of their choices and ways of thinking. This is seen especially when there is a famous celebrity or influencer who promotes a product or item you didn’t know you needed to have. This then creates a following of people adopting these styles and spreading the items. Social media has fueled the rise of micro trends as something can go viral overnight with a click of a button. Let’s dive into a few of the micro trends that have been prominent in the past year.
Your Favorite Micro Trends
- Balletcore- dressing in light pinks, pastels and creams. The use of bows, ribbons, mini skirts and tights. Paired often with ballet flats that are typically seen with a bow and can have a slight heel.
- Blokecore- The mixture of sporty and cute with the use of jerseys, shirts with numbers that are often paired with skirts and shorts. Hair typically in braids or slicked back with other accessories like bows, ruffle socks and clips. Sambas, Onitsuka Tigers and other sporty shoes are often featured.
- Coastal Grandmother- A lighter color palette that contains shades of blues, creams and yellow. Crochet, linen and other flowy pieces are popular paired with sandals and flip flops. Stripes, knit, and floral patterns add texture to this style.
How to Shop Smart
While it may be tempting to dive into these trends there are some things to be aware of before you start adding items to your cart. For example, there will always be higher end companies who will take advantage of these micro trend pieces and try to sell them at costly prices. Before you break the bank and shop at stores like Urban Outfitters, Zara and Edikted, go to your local thrift store as you can easily spot clothing items with the same aesthetic at a lower cost. Always make sure you ask yourself if you will get multiple wears out of a certain piece and if it will stay in your closet for long. Invest in clothing that you will get wear out of and that you can picture yourself wearing, not the influencer who is getting paid to talk about it. While at times it may be hard to avoid since being swayed on social media is tempting these days, make sure you are shopping smart yet chic.
Keep Fashion Exciting
All in all, fashion evolving can be fun and exciting to witness season to season. While micro trends will only continue to grow it’s okay to not chase every trend but to rather find pieces you feel comfortable and timeless in. Fashion is supposed to be about experimenting and trying new things by shopping smart and sustainable.
